1. Does Camden County Have a Leash Law?

Yes. All pets must be restrained to their owner's property by fence, leash, or other appropriate measure. Animals may not leave the owner's property unless properly leashed and accompanied by a responsible person. Animals chained, tethered or fenced outside must have a weatherproof shelter. Waste from the animals must not be allowed to accumulate causing an annoyance or health hazard.

Loose dogs are a public health and safety hazard. Since it is impossible to determine how well trained any individual dog is, Camden County requires all dogs be leashed and under the care & control of a competent person. Please remember when walking your dog(s) you are required to remove and dispose of any feces your animal deposits.

2. What Should I Do if I am Bitten by an Animal?

All animal bites should be washed with soap and water immediately. You should contact your Doctor, and Animal Control. All animal bites should be reported to Animal Control within 24 hours of incident. 912-576-7395 - weekdays or 912-729-1442 weekends or after 4 pm.

3. Are cats, as well as dogs, required to be vaccinated against rabies?

By Georgia law, dogs, cats, and ferrets must get rabies vaccination when they are twelve weeks of age or older.
Rabies vaccinations are only recognized in Georgia when performed by a licensed veterinarian. Call your veterinarian for more details on rabies shots for your pets. If your pet is bitten or scratched by a wild animal notify your veterinarian immediately.

4. Is it Normal For Raccoons to be Out in the Daytime?

While raccoons are nocturnal animals, they do sometimes forage in the daylight hours. They feed with the tides, and the moon phases. They are also opportunistic feeders, meaning if you feed animals outside and leave food out continuously you may unwittingly be attracting raccoons or other wildlife to your yard.

Pick up any uneaten animal food within 30 minutes, and do not throw scraps or leftovers in the yard or areas near your residence.

5. How do I report animal cruelty?

Call the Animal Control Office to report any suspected animal cruelty.

6. What Can I do About the Wildlife In, Under, or Around My House?

Animal Control does not typically remove wild animals from homes or businesses.

To help prevent wildlife from being attracted to your house or yard, do not leave food of any kind outside. If you feed cats/dogs outside, remove uneaten food after 30 minutes.

Placing screens over chimneys, and attic vents help reduce the risks associated with bat colonies, squirrels and other wildlife entering the home through those openings.

Do not let yard waste/debris stay piled up in your yard; it could attract rodents which will attract snakes.

7. What Do I Do About Barking Dogs?

Barkings dogs can be very annoying, and can also be considered a public nuisance.

Contact Animal Control during regular business hours to receive information regarding the procedure to begin a barking dog complaint.

8. What Can be Done About Stray Cats?

Animal Control offers the use of humane live traps to the residents of Camden County if you are having a problem with stray cats trespassing on your property. We do not charge for the use of the trap, although some situations may require a fully refundable deposit. We will deliver the trap to your home and instruct you on how to operate it. You are responsible for setting the trap and checking it regularly. Once an animal has been caught, notify Animal Control and we will remove the animal. Trapping of animals may be done only by the schedule agreed upon prior to trapping. Animals will be removed during regular business hours only.

Wildlife inadvertently caught will be released on site. We do not remove wildlife.

9. I Can No Longer Keep my Pet. Will You Come Pick it Up?

Animal Control does not pick up owner surrender pets. We encourage owners to seek help keeping the pet or finding it a new home. Owners unable to do either may take the animal to the Humane Society.

10. My Pet is Sick, Will You Come Look at It?

Animal Control Officers are not veterinarians. While we are familiar with some diseases, or conditions, we cannot dispense medical advice. We encourage all pet owners to see proper veterinary care for their pets.

11. You'll Find the Animal a Good Home, Won't You?

Animals not returned to an owner are taken to the Humane Society of Camden County where the animal will be held as a stray for five (5) days. Animals not reclaimed by an owner are then evaluated and possibly held for adoption. Animals held for adoption do not have a specific time limit.

12. You're Not Going to Hurt the Animal, Are You?

Animal Control does not use any equipment inherently harmful to any animals. All animals not returned to an owner are taken to the Humane Society of Camden County. They will attempt to find homes for animals not reclaimed by an owner.
